About The Biscayne Bay Pilots
Previous  First  Next

Once on the bridge, the pilot meets the vessel's captain and they discuss the vessel's operating condition and the proposed transit. The pilot then takes navigational control of the vessel.

Pilots maneuver large vessels in close quarters by giving steering and engine orders to bridge personnel. The pilot evaluates the risk, then makes decisions based on the size of the vessel, its equipment, personnel, draft, visibility, weather, dock assigned and tugs required to ensure the vessel's safe passage.

Pilots handle a variety of vessels.
